Problem & approach
When off-the-shelf software doesn’t fit, businesses improvise: glued-together tools, Excel as a database, a legacy system nothing else can talk to. At some point daily operations hang on a web that nobody designed — it simply grew.
I build such systems deliberately: starting small, cleanly structured, in stages that are each useful on their own. That includes the unglamorous part that decides how software ages — tests, documentation, backups, updates, monitoring. For me software is not a project that ends at handover, but a system that has to survive in daily operation.
My benchmark for that comes from industrial plant programming — where software is not allowed to work “most of the time”.
